Growing Grass

Patchy Grass Before Our Growing Efforts

Our backyard was in pretty poor shape when we first moved into our new homestead about a year ago. The lawn had a lot of bare patches due to being washed out. Underneath our deck also got muddy when it rained because grass couldn’t grow there. Fixing these problems became a priority for us this spring.

The first thing we did was fix the mud issue under the deck by putting in a patio. We did this ourselves, but that story can be saved for another time! The next thing we did to improve the situation was install our rain barrels on the downspouts. This captured most of the water and the remaining water that occasionally spills over we redirected to a channel with lots of rocks to break up the flow.

However we were still left with bare patches all over our yard. We hit up the home improvement store and got a small bag of grass seed. We spread out handfuls of the seed across our yard over all the bare patches. Then for a few weeks put the sprinkler out for a few minutes each day to keep the ground moist.

In about a month we could see a huge improvement in our lawn! Check out these before and after pictures!

We get a lot more enjoyment out of our yard when it is both functional and aesthetically pleasing!

About George

Hello, I'm George. I'm an engineer by profession and am blessed with a wonderful full-time job in Northern Virginia. However, I'm also very interested in building up my non-technological skills that allow me to expand my knowledge into new areas that benefit my living today and may prove useful in the event that technology skills are no longer needed. My wife, Martha, and I started this website to share our experiences in developing and maintaining our homestead. Our goal is to strive to live every day in a way where we are continually improving ourselves through learning new skills and trades, and gaining experience. This work improves our quality of life for both the here and now, and the future, whatever it may bring. My hope is that our thoughts and experiences shared through our website will aid you in your journey and help you gain independence daily. View all posts by George
